Disabled Facilities Grant: a plain-English guide
How council grants for home adaptations work, and how to apply in Cheshire West and Chester, Halton and Warrington.
Eligibility is decided by your council — we can't guarantee a grant. We can explain how it works and provide a quote for your application.
What is it?
A Disabled Facilities Grant (often called a DFG) is money from your local council towards changes to your home that help a disabled person live there more safely and independently — for example, replacing a bath with a level-access shower.
Who may be eligible?
- The disabled person must live in the property, or plan to. Homeowners and tenants can both apply.
- The council usually asks an occupational therapist to assess what changes are needed.
- For adults, the grant is usually means-tested, so income and savings are taken into account.
Full details are on the government's Disabled Facilities Grants page.
How to apply
- Contact your local council's adaptations or housing team and ask about a Disabled Facilities Grant.
- An occupational therapist may visit to assess your needs.
- The council will usually ask for quotes for the work.
- Wait for the council's decision before any work starts.
How long can it take?
It varies by council and by how busy they are. Ask your council for their current timescales when you apply.
